Tracheostomy surgery

A tracheostomy is an opening made at the front of the neck so a tube can be placed into the windpipe to assist your breathing. It is most commonly performed in an operating room under general anaesthesia, which keeps you unaware during the surgery.

A local anaesthetic to numb the neck and throat may be used if the surgeon is concerned about the airway being compromised under general anaesthesia, or if the procedure is done in a hospital room rather than an operating room. Dr. Gouda Ramesh is well experienced in ENT treatment.

When It’s Needed

When is a tracheostomy needed?

A tracheostomy may be required to:

Bypass a blocked or narrowed airway
Support long-term ventilation
Help clear secretions from the lungs
Protect the airway after major surgery or injury
Manage conditions that affect breathing
The Procedure

How a tracheostomy is done

There are two main approaches, chosen to suit your needs:

Surgical tracheostomy

  • Done in an operating room or a hospital room
  • A horizontal cut is made at the lower front of the neck
  • The muscles are eased back and a small part of the thyroid is divided to expose the windpipe
  • A tracheostomy opening is made near the base of the neck

Minimally invasive (percutaneous)

  • Performed at the bedside in a hospital room
  • A small cut is made near the base of the front of the neck
  • A special lens is passed through the mouth to view the throat
  • A needle guides creation of the opening, which is widened to fit the tube

Placing the tracheostomy tube

  • A tracheostomy tube is placed into the opening
  • A neck strap on the faceplate stops it slipping out
  • Temporary stitches may secure the faceplate to the skin
  • Our team guides you on tube care and recovery
Anaesthesia & Care

Anaesthesia & what to expect

A tracheostomy is most commonly performed in an operating room under general anaesthesia. A local anaesthetic may be used instead if there are concerns about the airway under general anaesthesia, or if the procedure is carried out at the bedside in a hospital room.

The type of procedure depends on why the tracheostomy is needed and whether it is planned. Our ENT team uses safe, precise techniques and supports you and your family through tube care and recovery.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about tracheostomy surgery.

A tracheostomy is an opening made at the front of the neck so a breathing tube can be placed into the windpipe. It assists breathing when the airway is blocked or long-term ventilation is needed.

Our experienced ENT team performs tracheostomy surgery using safe, precise techniques — in an operating room or, when appropriate, at the bedside in a hospital room.

There are two main approaches: a surgical tracheostomy (a cut at the lower front of the neck to make the opening) and a minimally invasive (percutaneous) tracheostomy performed at the bedside using a needle and a viewing lens.

It is most commonly done under general anaesthesia. A local anaesthetic may be used if there are airway concerns or if the procedure is performed in a hospital room.

It may be needed to bypass a blocked or narrowed airway, support long-term ventilation, clear lung secretions, or protect the airway after major surgery or injury.
