Skip to main contentEar pain, fever, a blocked ear or fluid draining from the ear? Our ENT specialists provide fast, safe and gentle middle ear infection treatment for children and adults.
A middle ear infection (otitis media) is an infection or inflammation of the air-filled space behind the eardrum, where the three tiny hearing bones sit. A narrow channel called the Eustachian tube normally ventilates this space and drains it towards the throat. When a cold, throat infection or allergy swells that tube, fluid gets trapped and germs multiply, causing pain, pressure and reduced hearing.
It is especially common in babies and young children, whose Eustachian tubes are short and narrow, but adults can be affected too. Consult Dr. Gouda Ramesh for middle ear infection treatment in Hyderabad.

A sudden infection with ear pain, fever and a red, bulging eardrum. It often follows a cold or sore throat.
Fluid stays behind the eardrum without active infection, causing a blocked or muffled feeling. Also known as glue ear.
A long-standing infection with a hole in the eardrum and repeated or continuous ear discharge. It needs specialist treatment to protect hearing.
Symptoms often start a few days after a cold or sore throat. Young children cannot tell you what hurts, so watch their behaviour closely.
These can be signs that the infection is spreading. Call your nearest branch straight away or message us on WhatsApp.
Knowing the cause helps us choose the safest, most effective treatment for you or your child.
Treatment depends on your age, how severe the infection is, and whether it is a first episode or a recurring problem. After examining the ear, your ENT specialist will recommend the right step for you.
Many mild infections settle within a few days. Pain and fever relief, rest and plenty of fluids keep you comfortable, and your doctor will advise the right medicine and dose for your age and weight.
Not every ear infection needs antibiotics. They are prescribed for more severe or persistent infections, in very young babies, or when both ears are affected. Always complete the course your doctor gives you.
Treating the trigger helps prevent repeat infections. This can include medication for allergy or sinus infection, and management of enlarged adenoids that block the Eustachian tube.
For a discharging ear, microscopic or endoscopic cleaning (aural toilet) followed by suitable ear drops helps clear infection and protect the eardrum. Please do not put any drops or oil in a discharging ear unless your doctor advises it.
For repeated infections or fluid that does not clear, a small cut in the eardrum drains the fluid and a tiny ventilation tube (grommet) keeps the middle ear aired. It is usually done under general anaesthesia in children and brings an immediate improvement in hearing.
A persistent hole in the eardrum, ongoing discharge or a cholesteatoma (a skin growth in the middle ear) may need tympanoplasty to repair the eardrum, or tympano-mastoidectomy to clear disease from the bone behind the ear. Our team performs endoscopic laser tympano-mastoidectomy.

A middle ear infection (otitis media) is an infection or inflammation of the air-filled space behind the eardrum. It often follows a cold, throat infection or allergy and is most common in babies and young children, although adults can get it too.
Many mild cases settle within a few days with pain relief and rest. However, an ENT specialist should examine the ear to decide whether antibiotics are needed, especially in babies, in severe cases, or if symptoms last more than two to three days.
Not always. Doctors consider the child's age, how severe the symptoms are and whether one or both ears are affected. Your ENT specialist will advise whether to treat with antibiotics or to observe closely for a short time.
The ear infection itself is not passed from person to person, but the cold or throat infection that often triggers it is contagious.
Temporary hearing loss is common while fluid is present behind the eardrum. Repeated or long-standing infections can damage the eardrum or the tiny hearing bones and may cause lasting hearing loss, so timely treatment matters.
Surgery may be advised for repeated infections, fluid that does not clear (grommet insertion), a persistent eardrum hole or discharge (tympanoplasty), or when infection has spread to the bone behind the ear or a cholesteatoma is present (mastoidectomy).
