Tonsillitis is an infection of your tonsils. Common symptoms include a sore throat together with fever, swollen tonsils, trouble swallowing and enlarged lymph nodes. Although most common in children, tonsillitis can affect people of all ages.

There is no specific cure for tonsillitis, but you can ease the symptoms by taking paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain, drinking plenty of fluids and getting adequate rest. If tests show a bacterial infection, a short course of oral antibiotics may be prescribed.
If oral antibiotics are not effective for bacterial tonsillitis, intravenous antibiotics may be needed in hospital. For frequent or recurrent tonsillitis, surgical removal of the tonsils (tonsillectomy) may be recommended.
